Latino Health and Safety Fair Held in Catawba County
Catawba County’s first Latino Health and Safety Fair was held on Saturday, September 13 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Hickory. Area agencies and churches were invited to present services available to Latino children and families all in their native language of Spanish. The following agencies and churches provided a booth with health and safety materials in Spanish as well as a person at each booth available to answer questions in Spanish: The Children’s Resource Center, Parents as Teachers, Family Medicaid, Family Food Assistance, Cooperative Christian Ministry, Catawba County Health Department, Fire Department, North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, Family Guidance, Children’s Developmental Services Agency, St. Luke’s UM Church, Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, Bethel Baptist Church, and Pan de Vida.
In addition to the very informative booths for families, classes were held for Latino families on Darkness to Light, a sexual abuse prevention program, provided by The Children’s Resource Center; Fire Safety provided by the Hickory Fire Department; Families Eating Smart—Moving More by the Catawba County Health Department; and Diabetes Prevention provided by the Cooperative Extension Service. Twenty-five families were trained in each of the listed subjects. Approximately twenty children were provided child care, activities and classes on fire safety and nutrition as well.
The Latino Health Fair was organized in collaboration between St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and The Children’s Resource Center. The Children’s Resource Center is a non-profit child care resource and referral agency dedicated to helping improve services to young children and their families. The CRC is a Smart Start funded program.
